We had a pressed schedule on the day we visited, but the volunteer working there was wonderfully informative and gave fascinating information. Definitely worth a visit, and doesn't take long at all.

Must-See While Kids Are Young
While Gettysburg is great for all ages, don't miss your window of opportunity to share this important historic site with your kids. At this place, people chose to give their lives to preserve the union or the ideal of states rights, either way, both believed in ideals that were totally American. We did a great bus tour but I would recommend hitting the visitors center first and the cyclorama to get a clear understanding of the lay of the land and the three days of battle. Great for kids over 10.Added May 28, 2017 by Margee Moore - ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This is a beautiful cemetery remembering the soldiers that fought in Gettysburg. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the silence. It's expected that you will be quiet and reverent while you are visiting. The monuments are beautiful, as is each monument in Gettysburg.
One of the more interesting aspects are the markers for the trees which give names for each type growing there. There are quotes from the poem, "Bivouac of the Dead" written by Theodore O'Hara, throughout the cemetery on plaques, which should be read by all.
The unmarked graves are heartbreaking. They range from "Unknown" engraved in the stone rings that surround the Soldiers National Monument to markers simply engraved with numbers and nothing else.
Many people leave pennies on the monuments, face up in respect. Usually there are more at the Lincoln Address Monument than anywhere else.
This is so worth seeing, to pay respects, to remember. It's also just a beautiful quiet place to walk.

Early morning is a nice time to visit. Very quiet and very peaceful. The history here is invaluable.
